A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER:

Some people choose to self-pay for services despite having insurance coverage. Reasons why:

  • Insurance companies require a diagnosis. Although mental health diagnoses are considered protected health information under HIPAA, some prefer not to have a label due to stigma and perceived implications diagnoses may have on employment, future insurance coverage, relationships, etc.

  • Insurance companies might ask for additional information in order to decide how much treatment will be covered based on medical necessity

  • Some insurance providers set limitations on session length, type of therapy provided and number of sessions per year

Self-pay services allow clients increased privacy and control over their treatment.
